Dale Alabaster photography

My name is Dale Alabaster, I live in Melbourne, Australia.
I have been doing photography since about 2004 as an amateur.
I started off my love for photography by borrowing my brothers Canon A410 for about 1 year. This camera was quite limiting in functionality and constantly borrowing it off my brother was getting to be a hassle, so I bought my first real camera, a Fuji S5500 and got to know the Apeture and Shutter priority modes.
After spending another year on this camera I went and bought my first SLR - a film Canon EOS ELAN IIe (otherwise known as the 50e) and my first two lenses, a 35-80mm f4.5-5.6 USM lens and an Ensinor M42 mounted 80-200mm f/4.5-5.5 lens (with the M42->EF converter)
After about 1 year of using this camera and going through only a few roles of film due to the ongoing cost of film I decided to move back to digital. I ended up buying the Canon EOS 40D and sticking with my first two lenses.
It wasn't long until I realised that I had made a mistake in not having better lenses, so I went and bought a secondhand 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II lens for landscape photography, and mid 2008 I bought the 50mm f/1.8 prime due to the low cost and great reviews and being allowed to handle one at a DeviantART meet that I went to around 2007.

My camera setup as of today is as follows :

Canon EOS 40D.
Canon EOS ELAN IIe

EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6
EF 50mm f/1.8
EF 36-80mm f/4.5-5.6 USM
Ensinor M42 mount 80-200mm f/4.5-5.5

My first real test of the 40D was when I visited New Zealand in December, 2007, just a few weeks after I recieved the 40D. I was still getting used to the camera and took most of my shots in Program shift, unfortnately this didn't push my limits much and I didn't end up with too many really great photos.
These days I love to shoot in manual mode as much as possible, occasionally in Aperture priority or Shutter priority modes if the lighting is constantly changing and I have little time to react.

I enjoy shooting nature and night shots, things that I can practice on without them getting bored of me taking photos of them at different angles and experimenting with them.
I love to shoot long exposure shots at night with a tripod, I am looking at getting an ND filter so I can do the same with rivers and streams and capture the natural movement in nature.

Currently I am avaliable to shoot for events, however as I am still practicing I will not shoot important events such as weddings unless another photographer is present. I am currently not charging for my services, except for the cost of transport to and from the venue, and the cost of any extra equipment that may be needed (such as the hire of a flashgun or specific lens/filter) and any other costs incurred (such as entry fees to the venue or food/drink.)
